We love books

I am privileged to be a part of a group of book artists who meet monthly and share ideas and inspire each other.
They are:

Sandra Winkworth
Concertina book of drawings and found paper objects

Barbara Bartlett
This glorious book was made of tea bags

Bernard Appassamy
Sacred Hands: Shortlisted for the Blake Prize and Director's Cut exhibition 2009
Now part of the collection of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital's museum

Upcycled copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales rescued from
a fence in Newtown: in a box covered in the same pages.

Lisa Giles
Lisa's piece is at the back - an origami chain made
from upcycled real estate magazine pages

Julie Bookless
Box and book made from old maps
Avril Makula

Mrs Merivale: a Flag Book with text from Leaves of Grass by Patrick White

Cathie Edlington

Island of Rust: Double Concertina

Gary Smith
The Day at Braille Beach  made from found materials including empty sushi soy sauce bottles

Encouraging Words: a concertina in a box

It's a concertina book in a tiny box.
Parts of the back of the concertina are from an abandoned copy of As You Like It I found on a fence in Newtown.
The front is encouraging words gleaned from magazines, and tiny photographs I took myself around the world.
The box is covered in some poetry from Henry Kendall's Leaves from Australian Forests, which my dad gave me as a birthday present when I was 8.
I like it because it's a small delightful object.
The box measures 5 x 5 x 6.5 cm, the concertina pages are 4 x 4 cm.
It has 78 pages.

Avril Makula: Alphabet City Press

I met Avril Makula a few weeks ago at Sturt Summer School in Mittagong, where we made books together. I just visited her blog which tracks all kinds of typography and was impressed: like Avril herself it is focused, succinct and beautiful.
And in the spirit of Avril's typography, here are some beautiful signs I have found in my travels:

Emergency exit sign on a bus

old oil sign, photographed in Oberon, NSW

Ladies and Gents Baths

The inside of my friend Sian's coat.

Inspiring you to paint the canvas

I found this on the smallest forest (to which I have now subscribed).
It's a time lapse video of a woman painting, which does indeed, inspire me to paint.

The Incomparable Sara Bowman

I just finished a week at Sturt Summer School in Mittagong, NSW making artist's books with Sara Bowen, who is the woman who began Book Art Object.
I have just bookmarked her blog, which is worth a look!
